Mr. Mahiepala Herath completed his education from St Mary's college, Kegalle and joined the local government service which gave him the opportunity to fulfill his childhood ambition of serving the public. His father, setting an example also while working as the sub post master at Rambukkana Yatagama post office, was a prominent social worker in the area.
Mr. Mahiepala Herath excelled in his duties which attracted the attention of his superiors including the government agent. He helped and supported everyone who came across in his official capacity, thereby building up a strong and popular image.
Popularity gained as a public servant open a window for him to |
become the chairman of the multi - purpose corporative society in Kegalle Electorate. He used this opportunity and his inherent skills to make the branch societies more efficient.
The cooperative movement being impressed with his achievement, appointed him as the chairman of the 'co - opfed ' - the central distribution network of the co -co-operative movement. During his tenure of office at co-opfed he was chosen as a Director of the International co-operative alliance.
late Hon prime minister, Mrs. Sirimawo Bandaranaike having observed the capabilities and the dedication of Mr. Herath, invited him to be the chief organizer of Sri Lanka freedom party of the Rambukkana electorate.
In 1994 he won the Rambukkana electorate and entered the parliament.

| Later he was appointed as the deputy minister of housing, construction and urban development. During his period he was instrument in introducing housing schemes for low income for low income families and rural water supply and drainage board. Further in recognition of his service he was appointed as the cabinet minister of rural industrial development in 1999.
In 2004 he contested the Sabaragamuwa Provincial council elections and secured the highest number of votes and was appointed as the chief minister. While functioning as the chief minister of the province he has taken the additional responsibility of the provincial education ministry.
As the minister of education he brought in effective changes leading to the solution of a number of long standing problems that existed within the education system in the province. He persuaded international organizations to provide funds for some of the vital projects for upgrading the educational standards. Vocational training and measures to an international standard are among his invaluable inputs. Notable among these are the recruitment of thousands of new graduates and assigning them to remote schools that experienced shortage of teachers, promoting teaching of science and mathematics and providing infrastructure facilities to schools located in backward areas with the sponsorship of international organizations such as Rhone Alpse of France.
Besides being an active social worker Mr. Mahiepala Herath is also a keen sportsman. He is the current president of the Sri Lanka Kabady federation. |
