- PDHS office works as a main hub in provincial health department.
- PDHS office supervises two Regional Directorate Offices in Rathnapura and Kegalle districts and 124 health institutions including 07 Base Hospitals, 14 District Hospitals.
- Inter coordination between the line ministry and the provincial health ministry.
- PDHS works as the main operational center to enhance the curative and preventive health care services and provides the facilities to other health institutions in financial, technical, and HRM fields.
- PDHS directly involves preparing the planning, and monitoring the quantitative and qualitative progress in existing projects.
- Responsible authority for functioning the specially identified projects.

- Links the Provincial Ministry with the Line Ministry and coordinate activities.
- Maintains a system of supervision of the health staff.
- Coordinates with the policy makers at the provincial level.
- Provides technical assistance in making decisions at the provincial consultative committee on health.
- Provides assistance to strengthen the intersectoral coordination by active participation at district coordinating committees.
- Maintains a comprehensive health information system.
- Ensure implementation of provincial and hospital internal disaster preparedness plans.
- Reviews the progress of the developmental activities pertaining to provincial health institutions.
- Arranges in-service local and overseas health education training programs.
- Supervises overall activities of all health related services.
- Arranges Periodic Board of Survey.
- Practices Productivity Concepts.
